How BMI is calculated

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. The standard World Health Organization categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30+ obese.

One important local note: for people of Indian and South Asian descent, health risk rises at a lower BMI. Indian guidelines often treat 23+ as overweight and 25+ as obese. So if your BMI lands in the mid-twenties, take it seriously even though the global chart calls it "overweight" rather than "obese".

BMI is a screening number, not a verdict. It doesn’t know the difference between muscle and fat, so a lean, heavily-trained lifter can read as "overweight" while carrying very little fat. Use it as a starting point, then look at waist size, energy, and how your clothes fit — or get a proper assessment on the floor.

Questions

Is BMI accurate for muscular people?+

Not really. BMI only uses height and weight, so it can’t tell muscle from fat. Athletes and regular lifters often score "overweight" while being lean. If you train hard, pair BMI with a body-fat estimate and waist measurement.

What is a healthy BMI for Indians?+

Global charts call 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, but Indian and South Asian bodies carry higher risk at lower numbers, so many Indian doctors use 23 as the overweight threshold. Aim to stay under 23 if you can.

How often should I check my BMI?+

Once a month is plenty. Day-to-day weight swings from water and food make daily BMI checks meaningless. Track the monthly trend, not the noise.
