One-to-one personal training in Surat with Brijesh Joshi

I am Brijesh Joshi, and I coach these sessions myself. I own this gym, I have been on its floor since 1999, and I am President of the association that runs South Gujarat's bodybuilding championships.

From ₹10,000 for one month, at either branch.

What one-to-one training here means

You are coached while you lift. Corrections happen inside the set, when they are still useful, rather than in a review afterwards. Load is written down and progressed on a schedule, so the question “am I actually getting stronger” has an answer you can read rather than a feeling.

Nutrition is part of it, and it is built around what you already eat. In Surat that usually means Gujarati vegetarian food, and a plan that pretends otherwise gets abandoned in week three. How that works in practice.

Parvez posted his transformation himself.

In March 2022 Parvez Jivasha posted his own before-and-after, “My August to December natural transformation.. Coach - @brijeshjoshifitness”, on his own Instagram, along with training footage filmed at the gym on his own channel.

That matters more than anything I can say about my own gym. I published every other result on this site myself. Parvez published this one, on his own account, naming his coach. It is the only piece of independent corroboration here, and I would rather point at it than bury it.

How many sessions a week, and what one looks like

Two or three a week for most people, settled after the first assessment rather than sold as a package before it. Four is for competitors and for people whose week genuinely allows it; one a week is not personal training, it is a fortnightly check-in with a large gap in the middle, and I would rather put you on a membership and a written programme than take the fee for it.

A session runs about an hour. It opens with yoga and the twelve positions of Surya Namaskar, the way every session at both branches has since 1999, then the working sets with me watching each one, then whatever needs undoing at the end — usually the hips or the upper back, depending on what your job does to you. I am not counting your reps out loud and I am not there for encouragement. I am there to see the rep where your position changes, and to stop the set before the one after it.

You are expected to train on the days I am not with you. The programme covers the whole week, and the sessions are the points where it gets corrected rather than the only times you lift.

What happens if it is not working

Tell me, in the session, rather than quietly stopping. Somebody who stops coming in week six has usually decided something in week three and not said it, and by then a month has been wasted that did not need to be.

If the programme is wrong, it gets rewritten, which costs you nothing and is a normal part of the work rather than an admission of anything. If the hour is wrong, we move it. If the honest answer is that you do not need one-to-one coaching — and for a fair number of people it is — I will say so and put you on a membership instead, because a client who feels they overpaid tells more people than a client who feels they got a fair deal.

On refunds and pausing a block: ask at the start, before you pay, and get the answer from me directly on +91 98790 69960. This site publishes what the gym charges, and it is not going to publish a refund policy it has not confirmed with you in person.

What I will not promise

A number on a date. Anybody who tells you how many kilos you will lose in ninety days is guessing, and the guess is a sales tool rather than a forecast. What varies between two people on identical programmes is sleep, stress, adherence on the days nobody is watching, medication, genetics and what was happening to their body before they arrived, and none of that is knowable in a first conversation.

What is reasonable to expect is that you will be taught to lift correctly, that the programme will change as you do, and that somebody will notice in week two rather than month three if it is not going anywhere. Members' results are published with names and timeframes on the results page, including the ones that took eight months rather than eight weeks.

I also will not coach anabolic steroid use, at any level, for anybody. That is set out with reasons in the steroids guide, and it is not negotiable at any price.

How the first month goes

  1. Session one is assessment. What you can do now, what hurts, what your week actually looks like, and what you eat on a normal day, not an idealised one.
  2. Weeks one to three are technique. You learn the squat, the press, the hinge and the row. Load stays deliberately light while the pattern is built, which feels slow and is not.
  3. From week four, load moves. Linear progression while it keeps working, and it works for longer in beginners than most people expect.
  4. Food is adjusted at the edges. Portion size, the oil, the sugar in tea, and when you eat around a session.

Where you would train

Either branch, Adajan, which opens at 6:00 am, or Katargam on Ved Road, which opens at 5:00 am. Both run until 10:00 pm, Monday to Saturday. Pick the one you will actually get to on a bad day; proximity beats preference over three months. The all-in cost and the floor at each are on personal trainer in Adajan and personal trainer in Katargam.

What it costs

Personal training here comes in three forms and they are priced differently, so the honest version takes a table rather than a sentence. All three are charged on top of a gym membership, which starts at ₹1,700 a month — the coaching fee does not include the floor.

Personal training options at S R Gym compared on price per month, price for three months and who coaches
Option One month Three months Per month
With one of my trainers A coach I employ and have trained myself ₹7,000 ₹18,000 ₹6,000
With me Brijesh Joshi, on the floor since 1999 ₹10,000 ₹28,000 ₹9,333
Two of you together One coach, two people. Priced for the pair ₹12,000 ₹30,000 ₹10,000 ₹5,000 each

Which of the three you should actually take

Whether you need personal training at all, rather than an ordinary membership with coaching on the floor, is its own question, and it is answered with the numbers on personal training against a gym membership. For most people the answer is the membership.

Most people who do want it should take the first one. A trainer I employ has been taught to coach on this floor by me, works to programmes built the same way, and will correct your squat as readily as I will. For a beginner, for general fat loss, for getting strong, the ₹3,000 a month between us buys very little you will notice.

Take me when the situation is unusual rather than when you simply want the senior person: a competition you are preparing for, a medical complication that needs the programme rebuilt around it, or a long history of starting and stopping where the thing you are buying is somebody who will not let it happen again. Those are the cases where twenty-seven years of pattern recognition is worth paying for, and I will tell you on the phone if yours is not one of them. Competition work has its own page, bodybuilding coaching, and if you live abroad, online coaching for NRIs is the same coaching over video.

Take the pair rate if you already have somebody who trains at your level and keeps your hours. At ₹6,000 each it is cheaper per head than training alone with a trainer, which is not a promotion — it is what one coach's hour divided by two costs. The trade is real: half the attention, somebody else's schedule, and if your partner stops after five weeks you are paying pair rates for solo sessions.

Every rate, including longer terms, the couple membership and online coaching, is on the fees page. If you would rather check the coaching than the price, the credentials checklist sets out what to ask any trainer in India, with my own record put through it.

Membership and personal training, side by side

The gap between the two prices is large, so it is worth setting out plainly what the extra money buys and what it does not. Plenty of people are better served by the cheaper line.

An ordinary S R Gym membership compared with one-to-one personal training, on price, who writes the programme, who watches your sets, how food is handled, how often the plan is reviewed, and the hours at both branches.
Point of comparison Membership on its own Personal training
Price₹1,700 for one month. Full fees₹10,000 for one month
Who writes the programmeYou do, or whoever wrote the plan you arrived with. Ask on the floor and somebody will show you how a lift or a machine works, which every membership includes.I write it, after watching you lift and hearing what your week honestly allows.
Who watches your setsNobody in particular. I am on the floor rather than in an office, so a correction is there for the asking, but you have to catch me between other things.I watch them, and the correction arrives while the bar is still moving.
How food is handledIt is left to you. There is no printed diet chart to collect here, and nothing on sale at the desk to stand in for one.Handled alongside the training, and worked out from what your house actually cooks, usually Gujarati vegetarian. How that works
How often the plan is reviewedWhenever you decide to change something.Load is written down every session, and I go back over the whole programme at about the fourth week. That timing is my own judgement rather than a fixed policy.
Hours and branchesAdajan from 6:00 am and Katargam from 5:00 am, both until 10:00 pm, Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday. The same hours, at whichever of the two branches you pick.

Who this suits, and who it does not

This is for you if

  • You are a beginner and would rather be shown how to squat, press, hinge and row properly before anyone hands you a programme.
  • You have trained for a while, stalled, and cannot see why the numbers stopped moving.
  • Your previous attempt ended because the plan did not survive contact with your actual week of work and family.
  • You would rather be coached by the same person every session than be handed to whichever trainer happens to be free that evening.
  • You want the eating dealt with alongside the training, built around the food already cooked in your house rather than a separate chart.

Look elsewhere if

  • The price is what decides it for you. ₹10,000 is charged on top of the ₹1,700 membership rather than instead of it, the coaching on the floor is already included in the cheaper one, and a beginner can be taught properly without ever buying a coaching block.
  • You want a kilo figure and a date written down before you pay. I will not put one in writing, and if that is what you need in order to commit, three months of coaching is the wrong thing to buy.
  • Sunday is the only day you can train, because both branches are closed on Sunday and personal training is no exception.
  • You are looking for a class environment or a timetable to follow, since what happens here is barbell coaching on a gym floor.
  • You want supplements or anabolic steroids to be part of the plan. The gym sells no supplements of any kind and I will not coach anabolic steroid use at any level.
  • You already know how to write and run your own training and need only the room and the equipment, in which case membership at ₹1,700 for one month is the sensible spend.

Personal training FAQ

How much does a personal trainer cost in Surat?
At S R Gym, one-to-one personal training with Brijesh Joshi starts from ₹10,000 for one month. That price covers a coached block including programming and nutrition guidance. Hourly figures quoted by aggregator sites cover something different, so the two are hard to compare directly.
Who will actually train me?
Brijesh Joshi, the founder of S R Gym, coaches personal training clients himself at both the Adajan and Katargam branches in Surat. He has coached on the floor since 1999.
Do I need to already be fit to start personal training?
No. Most personal training clients at S R Gym start as beginners. The first sessions are spent learning to execute the barbell lifts correctly, because a programme you cannot perform is three months wasted.
Can women get personal training at S R Gym?
Yes. Women train at both S R Gym branches and several of the results published on this site are women, including a member who went from 111 kg to 74 kg in five months. Call +91 98790 69960 to ask about timings that suit you.
How many days a week do I need to train?
Three to four days a week is enough for most people starting out, and it is more sustainable than the six-day plan beginners usually propose. The programme is written around the days you can genuinely commit to, not the days you would like to.
