How to check a personal trainer's credentials in India

Personal training is not a licensed profession in India. There is no register to search and no legal minimum, which means the checking is left to you. It takes about four questions.

This page is published by a gym, so at the end I put our own coach through the same checklist, including the two answers that do not flatter him.

Seven questions, in the order worth asking them

  1. 01

Ask for the issuer and the year, not the qualification

“Certified personal trainer” is not a credential, it is a category. “GFFI Fitness Academy of India, personal trainer certificate” is a credential, because both halves can be checked. Anybody who has one will tell you both without being pressed.

  2. 02

    Ask to see it

This is the single most useful question and almost nobody asks it. A trainer with certificates has them on a phone. A pause, or an offer to bring it next time, is an answer in itself.

  3. 03

    Check whether it has expired

Judging registrations and some certifications run for a fixed term. A lapsed card is not dishonest, but presenting it as current is. Ask when it was issued and whether it is still valid.

  4. 04

Ask what the certificate does not permit

Some certificates carry restrictions printed on them. A trainer who knows what their own qualification does not allow is telling you they have read it.

  5. 05

Ask what they have done since

One certificate from a decade ago and nothing after is a different story from a record of courses across years. The industry moves; the honest signal is continuing education, not a single badge.

  6. 06

Ask who will actually coach you

At a larger gym the person who sells the package and the person who watches your squat are often different people, and the second one may change in three months. Ask for the name of the second one and how long they have been there.

  7. 07

Ask what happens if something hurts

The correct answer involves a doctor or a physiotherapist. A trainer who says they will “fix” a joint, or who has an opinion about your medication, has just told you where their limits are not.

The fifth question below is what a trainer has done since their certificate. One answer worth more than any of them is that they teach the course: this is Brijesh taking a session for trainee instructors in Surat. Somebody who can teach the material to a room is being tested on it in a way that sitting the exam never tested them.

What the common Indian certifications actually mean

None of these is a licence. India does not license personal trainers, so every certification below is a private qualification from a private body, and its worth depends entirely on the body.

International certifications — ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM — carry the most weight and are the hardest to obtain. They are also uncommon in a neighbourhood gym in a tier-two city, and their absence does not tell you much on its own.

Indian institutes such as K11, GFFI and their peers are what most working trainers in Gujarat hold. They are real courses with real examinations. Ask which one and check that the institute exists and still operates.

Seminars and workshops are a day or a weekend, and a trainer with a run of them across the years is telling you they kept learning after they were hired. Just check they are described as what they are: a weekend on anabolic steroids or kettlebells is continuing education, not a certification, and the two get blurred.

Specialist courses — special population training, functional training, nutrition modules — matter most when they match your situation. If you are coming back from a knee problem or training with diabetes, that specific course is worth more than a general certificate.

What no fitness qualification permits

This is the part the industry is worst at. No personal training certificate, in India or anywhere, permits a trainer to diagnose an injury, treat a condition, prescribe or adjust medication, or replace a physiotherapist. A certificate in training people with medical considerations is a qualification to coach around a condition alongside the doctor managing it. It is not a clinical qualification and it never becomes one.

If a trainer offers to take you off a medication, tells you your doctor is wrong, or diagnoses what is causing your back pain, that is not confidence. That is the moment to stop.

The same checklist, applied to our own coach

It would be easy to write the page above and quietly not answer it. So: Brijesh Joshi, who has coached at S R Gym since 1999.

Issuer and year: 16 certificates are photographed on the credentials page, each with its issuer and, where the document carries one, its date. They run from a Palaestra workshop in Surat in December 2010 to a camp in Pune in August 2026.

Can you see them: yes, without asking. That is what the credentials page is.

At what level: he judges the sport at zone, state and national level. He holds an IBBFF Category B judge card, is President of the regional association that runs Mr. Surat and Mr. South Gujarat, and has officiated twice at the Mr. India championship. He also teaches on the certificate course that produces other trainers, which is a different test of knowing the material than sitting the course was.

Anything expired: yes. His Gujarat State Bodybuilders Association judges card, number 0010, lapsed in February 2024 and is published expired rather than quietly dropped. His IBBFF Category B card is current.

Anything restricted: yes, one. A 2015 clinical hypnotherapy certificate states on its own face that practice under it is restricted to psychology degree-holders or medical practitioners. So nothing hypnotherapeutic is offered at either branch. It is listed anyway, because a course you took and do not trade on is still part of the record.

Anything overstated: one thing, since corrected. This site called him a "certified yoga trainer" on nine pages; the certificate is a one-month foundation course whose own text calls it introductory, so the pages now say he trained in yoga instead. Worth saying out loud on a page about checking credentials, and worth saying only once.

What since: documented courses, workshops and seminars dated 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2026, and judging registrations in 2019, 2024 and 2025. He is also faculty at the G-KFTI Fitness Training Institute, where he lectures on Fitness Training, GYM Management, Advance Fitness Training, First Aid & CPR and Steroid and supplement awareness.

Who coaches you: him. That is the whole model here, and it is why the comparison page puts "who coaches, and for how long they have been there" third out of eight.

If something hurts: you are sent to a doctor. That is the standing answer on the joint pain page, the return-after-injury page and the diabetes page, and it does not change because somebody has paid.

If you are checking a gym rather than a person

The credentials of the coach are one of eight things worth comparing, and for most people they are not the first. Distance decides attendance more reliably than any qualification does. There is a fuller comparison on finding the best gym in Surat, and a practical walkthrough on how to choose a gym in Surat.

If you are on the other side of this and thinking about becoming a trainer yourself, the route and what it actually costs are set out on becoming a personal trainer in Surat.

And if you would rather skip the questions and read what people who already train here say, including the complaints, that is on the reviews page.

Checking a trainer: common questions

How do I check if a personal trainer in India is qualified?
Ask which certification they hold, who issued it, and in what year, then ask to see it. A qualified trainer will produce it without hesitation. Certification in India is not licensed by the government, so there is no central register to search: the certificate itself, and the issuing body's own website, are what you have. Be wary of a trainer who describes a qualification but will not name the issuer or the year.
Which personal trainer certifications are recognised in India?
Internationally, ACE, ACSM, NSCA and NASM carry the most weight. In India, K11, GFFI and similar institutes are widely recognised by employers. There is no single legal standard, so what matters more than the badge is whether the issuer is a real institute with a verifiable existence, and whether the trainer has done anything since.
Is a gym trainer allowed to give medical advice?
No. A personal trainer is not a doctor, a physiotherapist or a dietitian, and no fitness certification changes that. A trainer can coach exercise and general nutrition, and can work alongside your doctor. If a trainer offers to manage a medical condition, adjust your medication, or diagnose an injury, that is the point to leave.
What does a special population training certificate mean?
It means the trainer has done a course in coaching people with additional medical or physical considerations, such as diabetes, blood pressure, joint problems or a post-pregnancy return. It is a training qualification and not a clinical one. It does not make anybody able to treat the condition, and a good trainer holding one will still send you to a doctor first.
Should I trust a trainer with no certification but years of experience?
Sometimes, but check the experience the same way you would check a certificate. How long at this gym rather than in the industry, who they have trained, and whether anyone will vouch for them by name. Experience that cannot be pointed at is the same as a certificate that cannot be produced.
Can I ask to see a trainer's certificates at S R Gym?
Yes, and you do not have to ask. Every certificate is photographed and published on the credentials page, with dates, including one registration that has lapsed and one course whose own certificate restricts what it permits. Call +91 98790 69960 if you want to see an original.
