Surya Namaskar calorie calculator

This calculator exists because the number circulating on most Surya Namaskar pages is wrong, and wrong in a way anybody can check with a calculator of their own. It uses the figure actually measured in a laboratory, shows you the arithmetic, and tells you plainly how small the number is.

The number most pages get wrong

The measurement everybody quotes comes from a 2004 study in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology. Twenty-one men were measured while actually performing the sequence. One round took an average of 3 minutes 40 seconds and cost 13.91 kilocalories. That is the origin of the figure, and it is a sound piece of measurement.

You will then find page after page citing that same study and telling you that twelve rounds burns four hundred calories or more. Thirteen point nine multiplied by twelve is a hundred and sixty-seven. The arithmetic takes five seconds and it has apparently not been done by anyone repeating the claim.

I am labouring this because it matters for what you expect. A hundred and sixty-seven calories for a twelve-round practice is a genuinely useful amount of movement for about forty-five minutes of gentle work. It is roughly two rotli. Anyone selling Surya Namaskar to you as a weight-loss method on the strength of a four-hundred-calorie figure is either not checking or not telling.

The practice earns its place at the start of a session for entirely different reasons, which are set out on the Surya Namaskar page.

Rounds, time and calories at a glance

At the measured moderate pace, for a person of roughly the build of the men in the study. Your own figure will differ with body weight, which is what the calculator adjusts for.

Surya Namaskar rounds against approximate time and energy cost
Rounds Approximate time Approximate kcal What that is
4 15 minutes 56 A warm-up before weights
6 22 minutes 83 A generous warm-up
12 44 minutes 167 About two rotli
24 88 minutes 334 The dose used in the six-month strength study
108 6 hours 36 minutes 1,502 The traditional festival count, and not a training plan

The research this page rests on

Every figure this calculator uses comes from one of these, and where a source is weak that is said rather than smoothed over.

  1. Energy cost and cardiorespiratory changes during the practice of Surya Namaskar

Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 48(2), Sinha B, Ray US, Pathak A, Selvamurthy W, 2004 · Physiological measurement during actual practice, 21 men, no control group

Twenty-one male volunteers were measured while actually performing Surya Namaskar. One round took an average of 3 minutes 40 seconds and cost 13.91 kilocalories, which works out at about 3.79 kilocalories a minute. Oxygen demand was more than three times higher in the eighth posture than in the first. This is a descriptive measurement of what the practice costs the body, not evidence of any health outcome, and the participants were young trained soldiers rather than a general population.

  2. Multidimensional effects of Suryanamaskar on physical, physiological and psychological outcomes

Healthcare (Basel), 14(13), Choudhary S and colleagues, 2026 · Systematic review of 14 studies, no meta-analysis possible

The best synthesis available on Surya Namaskar specifically. It reports links to better flexibility, fitness and body composition, and the reviewers could not statistically combine the studies because they varied too much. No study was rated at low risk of bias, and most came from India with small samples. Their own verdict was promising rather than proven.

  3. A comparative study of slow and fast Suryanamaskar on physiological function

International Journal of Yoga, 4(2), Bhavanani AB and colleagues, 2011 · Comparative training study, 42 schoolchildren, no control group

Over six months, fast practice built more muscular endurance and behaved more like conditioning, while slow practice shifted measures toward calm. This is why pace changes the energy cost as well as the training effect. Participants were children aged twelve to sixteen and there was no non-exercising group, so it supports a principle about pace rather than a health claim.

Surya Namaskar and calories: common questions

How many calories does one round of Surya Namaskar burn?
About 13.9 kilocalories for a round lasting roughly 3 minutes 40 seconds, which is the figure measured during actual practice in a 2004 study in the Indian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology. That works out at roughly 3.8 kilocalories a minute. The measurement was taken in twenty-one young trained men, so treat it as a reasonable central estimate rather than a precise figure for your own body.
How many calories do 12 rounds of Surya Namaskar burn?
Around 167 kilocalories, using the same measured figure. You will find a great many pages citing that 2004 study and then telling you twelve rounds burns four hundred calories or more. Thirteen point nine multiplied by twelve is a hundred and sixty-seven, and the arithmetic is available to anybody who wants to check it.
Is Surya Namaskar good for weight loss?
It is genuine moderate-intensity exercise and it contributes, and on its own it is not a weight-loss strategy. A hundred and sixty-seven calories is roughly two rotli. Fat loss comes from the whole week of eating and training rather than from one sequence, which is why I use Surya Namaskar as the opening of a session rather than as the session.
How many rounds should I do?
Before a gym session, four to six rounds at a moderate pace, taking three or four minutes. Start with two if you are new and add one a week. As a practice in its own right you can go longer, and there is no need for the very high volumes used in some studies before you get the benefit of a good warm-up.
Does pace change the calories?
Yes, and it changes the training effect too. A faster round covers the same twelve positions in less time, so the cost per minute rises while the cost per round stays broadly similar. In one six-month comparison, fast practice built more muscular endurance while slow practice shifted measures toward calm. That study was in schoolchildren without a control group, so I treat it as a useful principle rather than a rule.
Where can I learn the twelve positions properly?
Every new member at S R Gym is taught the sequence in their first fortnight, at both branches, as part of an ordinary membership. Brijesh Joshi completed the Foundation Course in Yoga Science for Wellness at Surat's district yoga wellness centre in 2014. There is a full written walkthrough on the Surya Namaskar page, and a complete twenty-five minute session on his own channel. Call +91 98790 69960.

Energy cost varies with body weight, pace, fitness and how deeply each position is taken. Treat any figure here as a reasonable central estimate rather than a measurement of your own body.
