A gym for teenagers in Surat, from age 14
The short answer
S R Gym takes members from age 14. Teenagers train on the normal floor at Adajan or Katargam, supervised, at the same ₹1,700 a month everybody pays. A parent comes to the first conversation. Nothing is sold to them, and nobody here will coach a steroid to anybody.
Is it safe?
This is the first thing parents ask, and the research answer is clear. The American Academy of Pediatrics and an international consensus statement, endorsed by sports medicine and paediatric organisations, both support strength training for adolescents. Both name the same two conditions: qualified supervision, and load that rises gradually. The injuries in the literature cluster where those are missing, in unsupervised training and with weights too heavy for the person lifting.
So the honest answer is that it depends on the gym. A fourteen-year-old copying videos alone in a crowded gym is the risky version. A fourteen-year-old learning the movements with light weight while a coach watches is the version the research supports.
How it works here
- From age 14. Members aged 14 to 17 train on the normal floor, supervised, at either branch.
- A parent at the first conversation. We go through what your child wants, any medical history, and how the first month will run, with you in the room.
- No maximum lifts in the first month. The first weeks are for learning the squat, press, row and hinge with light weight. Every session opens with yoga and the twelve positions of Surya Namaskar, as it has at both branches since 1999.
- Nothing sold, nothing injected. Neither branch sells supplements. Brijesh refuses to coach anabolic steroids at any age, and the reasons are in the steroids guide, which is worth reading yourself.
What it costs
The same as for an adult. There is no youth rate, higher or lower.
| Term | Adajan | Katargam |
|---|---|---|
| One month | ₹1,700 | ₹1,700 |
| Three months | ₹3,000 | ₹3,500 |
| Twelve months | ₹9,000 | ₹10,000 |
For a first-timer, one month is the sensible start: it costs little to find out whether your child keeps coming. If they do, twelve months at Adajan works out at ₹750 a month. Every rate is on the fees page.
When to choose which branch
Katargam opens at 5:00 am and Adajan at 6:00 am, both until 10:00 pm, Monday to Saturday. For a teenager the afternoon, after school and before the evening rush, is usually the quietest and best time to learn. Pick the branch your child can reach without needing a lift every day, because that decides whether they keep going. Adajan and Katargam have full directions.
Who this is not for
Children under 14. And any teenager who wants a steroid cycle, a fat burner or a shortcut to a physique they saw online. They will be told no, and you will be told why. If your child is a college student rather than a schoolchild, the students page is written for them.
Questions parents ask
- What is the minimum age to join S R Gym?
- 14. Members aged 14 to 17 train on the normal floor under supervision at either the Adajan or Katargam branch in Surat, and a parent comes to the first conversation. Call +91 98790 69960 to arrange it.
- Is weight training safe for a 14 year old?
- Yes, when it is supervised and progressed sensibly. The American Academy of Pediatrics and an international consensus statement endorsed by sports medicine and paediatric bodies both conclude that resistance training is safe and beneficial for adolescents under those conditions. The injuries reported in the research cluster in unsupervised training and with loads too heavy for the person lifting.
- Will lifting weights stop my child growing taller?
- The American Academy of Pediatrics' clinical report on resistance training for children and adolescents treats stunted growth as a myth. What does carry risk is unsupervised heavy lifting and attempting maximum weights before the technique is learned, which is why teenagers here are supervised and do not test maximums in their first month.
- How much does a gym membership cost for a teenager in Surat?
- The same as for an adult: ₹1,700 a month at either branch, or ₹9,000 for twelve months at Adajan and ₹10,000 at Katargam. There is no separate youth rate.
- Will my child be offered supplements or steroids?
- No. Neither branch sells supplements of any kind, and Brijesh refuses to coach anabolic steroid use at any age. He teaches steroid awareness on a trainers' certificate course and will say the same thing to you that he says to your child.

Resistance training for children and adolescents
Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatrics, Stricker PR and colleagues, 2020 · Clinical report
Reviews the benefits and risks of resistance training for young people and supports it when properly supervised and progressed, noting declining muscular fitness in modern youth as a reason for nonathletes as well as athletes to take part.

Position statement on youth resistance training: the 2014 International Consensus
British Journal of Sports Medicine, Lloyd RS and colleagues, 2014 · International consensus statement
Endorsed by sports medicine, exercise science and paediatric organisations. Supports resistance training for young people with qualified supervision and age-appropriate progression as the conditions.
